Arsenal are reportedly closing in on the signing of Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United after the two clubs reached an agreement for his transfer.
Reports indicate that the deal is worth around £75 million, although sources in Brazil claim the final package could include additional bonuses and clauses that may increase the overall value of the move.
Newcastle United were initially believed to have valued Guimaraes closer to £100 million, but negotiations between the two clubs eventually moved towards a fee above £70 million.
The midfielder’s preferred shirt number, 39, has also reportedly been made available by Arsenal, increasing speculation that an official announcement could be close.
Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson confirmed that discussions over Guimaraes’ future had taken place, describing the negotiations as a process involving two sophisticated clubs.
It was not the fee that I think Arsenal had hoped to pay, and, of course, we would have liked an even higher number , Hopkinson said.
The move would see Guimaraes join Mikel Arteta’s squad as Arsenal continue to strengthen their midfield options. However, Arteta has avoided commenting on players who are not yet officially Arsenal players.
"I’m not going to talk about any players who aren’t Arsenal players," Arteta said.
Guimaraes joined Newcastle from Lyon in 2022 and has become one of the Premier League’s most highly rated midfielders. Lyon are also expected to receive a share of the transfer fee through a sell-on clause.
The transfer is yet to be officially announced by either club.
